SYNOPSIS: The town of Breckhaven was the best place to go skiing until one day a mysterious blizzard rolled in and the snow got sweeter and stickier--it was ice cream! The townspeople are excited at first but then the ice cream starts melting and creates an ooey gooey mess. Will the town survive and the snow come back?
Dear readers,
I have exciting news just in time to celebrate the winter: after 16 months and over 100 hours of tedious illustration work, my first ski-related title is born!! The Great Ice cream Blizzard was a story I told to my nephew on the couch one day. This book has probably been the most time-intensive storyline out of all 10 of my titles. Just as skiing is a “production”—the money it takes to ski, the heavy equipment and ornate designs of the suits—so it was to create the scenes in this story. As some of you may know, I grew up in Breckenridge, Colorado and ski raced there from 1996-2001 so this heavily inspired my book.
There is a lot of nostalgia in pop culture derived from growing up in a well-known ski resort, especially since two of my favorite comedies Dumb and Dumber and Christmas Vacation were both filmed in Breck! The zaniness of the ski characters in this book was also inspired by an early 90s screwball comedy called Ski Patrol. Interestingly, when I was midway through creating the book, I realized how much it paralleled the classic Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, another one of my favorite children’s books growing up! I believe kids and adults will cherish the nostalgia of ski season through my captivating storyline, inspired by these pop cultural classics listed above.
